How Tony scullion Peak Performance Expert Healed Me

“Your fears are a kind of prison that confines you within a limited range of action. The less you fear, the more power you will have and the more fully you will live.” ― Robert Greene

I knew something had to change.

Last December, I completed my fourth half-marathon race of the year—and for the last three miles of the race, it felt like I’d run completely out of gas. This was the third race in a row in which I’d felt depleted toward the end, despite following training plans to the letter, running 50 to 60 miles a week, and sleeping well; I’d even upped my strength training. I had no idea why this was happening. Well I based on the pre-race  Pop Tart breakfast I’d had that morning I suspected my diet might be off but what else was missing?

Searching for help, I connected with Tony Scullion, CEO of The Peak Performance Executive, and after talking together for thirty minutes and watching a few of his video interviews, I knew he was the best person to work with me. I felt connected to him, not just because he demonstrated fitness and nutrition mastery, but also because of his personal story. Tony applied his peak-performance principles in healing himself of the effects of a debilitating autoimmune disease and in rising above what he’d endured growing up in a violent, war-torn environment.

Tony had begun studying martial arts when he was just eleven years old, though not as a sport: he trained to defend himself and his family from the sectarian violence they experienced in Northern Ireland. He eventually put his fighting skills to practical use and began working fulltime as a club bouncer in Belfast. There he realized people can put aside their religious differences if they’re able to bond over something that interests them. For him that thing was fitness, and there he found common ground with many of the people who’d once hated him for his religion.

When he was 17, Tony quit the partying and hooligan lifestyle and got himself into the best shape of his life. People connected with him, caring little about his background and more about his competence. In 2015 he moved to Dubai, where he was able to develop himself professionally: his fitness coaching business took off, he ran a boot camp on the beach for the Kempinski Hotel that ended up on Physique TV, and he learned how to use social media to market his work and to reach thousands more people.

The first advice Tony gave me was to get more rest and increase my calorie intake. Now that’s the kind of fitness coaching I need! We did negotiate around the premise of working out less; I like a certain level of intensity and I couldn’t see myself giving that up. Tony adapted to my goals while bringing Tabata training into my life (and that of my wife, as we’re on this fitness journey together). Most importantly, Tony’s expertise helped me fix my nutrition problems.

Thirty days into the program, I was out running in a snowstorm, feeling like a total badass—and it suddenly dawned on me that in that moment I felt no pain! It had been years since I had been pain-free, and I never would have realized the benefits of achieving the delicate balance between calorie intake, strength training, nutrition, supplements, and rest, had I not worked with Tony. He helped me take my performance to the next level—but, more importantly, he helped me heal just as he’d healed himself of his own disease and pain he'd suffered growing up in Northern Ireland.

I talk to Tony almost daily now, not just about fitness but about common experiences that shaped our similar views on life, fitness, friendship and perhaps even spirituality.

Through running over 521 consecutive days (and still counting) in rain, snow, gail force winds, in the middle of the night to get it done before early flights, and in just refusing to quit I’ve realized something. This  journey is my destination and the characters  like Tony who I’ve met along the way, have changed my life in immeasurable ways. Thanks for being a great coach Tony!

LinkedIn is a great place to connect with Tony if you'd like to learn more about him, the people he has helped and his personal story.
